VOTE FOR CLIMATE ACTION at our next Local Government Elections.
6 Key Climate Areas
-
Environmental Protection
Like us, our native ecosystems are vulnerable to climate change. Local communities need investment that cares for both people and the planet. Stopping inappropriate land use and investing in nature-based solutions are key to supporting Auckland's communities.
Nature can protect us, but only if we also protect nature.
-
Climate-Friendly Transport
A liveable Tāmaki Makaurau means everyone has real choices for how they get around—choices that support the climate, our health, and our communities. But right now, 45% of Auckland’s climate emissions come from transport, and most people are still forced to rely on cars due to limited public transport, walking, and biking options.
While Auckland has a plan for an integrated transport network, progress is too slow and funding for public and active transport lags behind similar cities.
We urgently need better transport options.
-
Resource Recovery
Achieving zero waste is climate action. While most attention goes to landfill methane, waste emissions start long before disposal—through the extraction, production, transport and consumption of everything we buy. Many of these emissions happen offshore, but they're still part of Aotearoa’s carbon footprint.
We need candidates who understand that waste isn’t just a disposal issue—it’s a systems issue.
-
Community Conservation
Community groups play a key role in protecting nature and council owned land. Volunteers are replanting native forests, restoring dunes, cleaning up waterways and beaches, clearing weeds and trapping pests.
For many Aucklanders taking part in community conservation initiatives is an important way to give something back and show their love for nature.
For many local conservation groups, funding comes from local government.
-
Repair Initiatives
The Repair Movement in Aotearoa New Zealand is a growing response to our "throwaway culture" — championing sustainability, skill-sharing, and community resilience.
Repair Cafés are free pop-up events where volunteer experts offer their time and skills to help people fix broken household items, from clothing to electronics.
These events not only divert waste from landfills but importantly, they reduce the demand to produce more new items, making an impact high up on the waste hierarchy. Solutions like this need all the support they can get.
-
Kai Resilience
Local, community-led kai initiatives are helping build a low-carbon, climate-resilient food system. One that is secure and equitable — and grounded in regenerative and circular economic principles.
Volunteers, growers, and neighbourhood leaders are growing food, healing soil, composting waste, rescuing surplus kai, reconnecting people to the whenua and to each other. For many Aucklanders, participating in these efforts is a way to practice kaitiakitanga, caring for the land while ensuring everyone has access to affordable, nourishing food.
Why Local Government Matters
Local government plays a key role in shaping the environment we live in; investing in environmental services, public transport and infrastructure. The money they spend and the resources they allocate can improve the environmental quality of the place where you live, or degrade it.
We all want thriving nature, accessible & efficient transport, and a less wasteful economy.
